“The Wild Robot 2” Is In The Works

Dreamworks Animation

A sequel to 2024’s acclaimed animated feature “The Wild Robot” is in the works according to The Wrap.

Based on a novel by Peter Brown and written and directed by animation legend Chris Sanders, the first film follows a service robot shipwrecked on an island who must adapt to her surroundings, build relationships with the local wildlife and become the adoptive mother of an orphaned goose.

DreamWorks Animation released the film which made $334.5 million at the box-office from a budget of $78 million along with scoring rave reviews and three Oscar nominations.

The follow-up will be based on the next book “The Wild Robot Escapes”. In that book, Roz comes to life at Hilltop Farm, a dairy farm run by the Shareef family, which she is expected to help run. Although she attempts to act like the robot she was designed to be, she misses life on her island.

As she speaks with the animals, word of her situation and location get to Brightbill, who comes to save her, with the help of the farmer’s children. After escaping, Roz and Brightbill find more dangers and barriers to returning home.

Sanders will adapt the screenplay again, but the directorial reins are being handed over to Troy Quane (“Nimona”) and the first film’s head of story Heidi Jo Gilbert.

No word on which voices from the original would return. Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Matt Berry, Ving Rhames, Mark Hamill, and the late Catherine O’Hara starred in the original.
