The “John Wick” franchise has not only delivered superb reviews and increasing box-office with each entry, it has also sparked a couple of memorable fan theories. One such one is that the series will ultimately be a five-film saga with each entry serving as one of the five stages of grief.
However another has emerged this week on Reddit and is gaining steam online as it has spread. This theory speculates that the entire universe is actually set within a video game, and once you understand that then some things make more sense.
The theory suggests “Wick moves through the movie killing NPCs before encountering an end-stage boss who is usually more difficult, as well as there being minimum dialogue during the action scenes… dialogue takes place before and after the action scenes like cut scenes in a movie.”
In addition, it goes part of the way to explain Wick’s near invulnerability, the film’s gold coin currency, and the way the everyday public is nonchalant about the rampant violence – behavior more like NPCs than people. Then there’s The Continental which serves as a shop and game admin area where John Wick goes to recharge his health, get supplies and save the game.
The theory even speculates that future films will see Wick realising he is a person controlled character and trying to take revenge on the game creator(s) who created his wife and her death. A fourth film is in the works though when it will shoot is unclear. Reeves was filming a fourth “The Matrix” film but that halted production due to the coronavirus pandemic.
