“Supergirl” Tracking For Soft Box-Office Start

Warner Bros. Pictures

DC Studios’ “Supergirl” film opens in a month and early box-office projections paint an uncertain picture.

BoxOfficeTheory reports that the earliest projections for the title suggest the film will open somewhere between $47 million and $65 million domestically.

That’s a sharp drop from the $125 million that “Superman” debuted to last year, a movie that ultimately went on to gross $618 million worldwide. It’s also close to the likes of “The Marvels” and “Black Adam” in their debuts.

The film is said to have a production budget of around $170 million, meaning to reach a profit, it’s going to have to do considerably better.

The film finds itself surrounded by bigger competition with “Toy Story 5” opening the weekend before with a likely $130-160 million debut. The following weeks comes “Minions & Monsters” and the week after that the live-action”Moana”.

The movie, which opens on June 26th, has undergone multiple test screenings which means the studio is invested in making it work. Will it? We’ll find out in a few weeks.
