The third season of Netflix’s breakout hit “Stranger Things” has become the streaming service’s most-watched original series ever.
As part of its quarterly earnings report, the company announced that the 1980s-set sci-fi drama pulled in more than 64 million views in the four weeks after its July 4th premiere. Netflix counts a “view” as a member household watching 70% of one episode of a series.
That number far surpasses the numbers of any shows for the streamer has released similar figures for in past earnings reports and breaks previous record-holder “The Umbrella Academy” which snagged 45 million views in the same timeframe.
As part of the earnings report, the company also downplayed competitive pressure from the imminent launch of Apple TV+ and Disney+, telling shareholders it shouldn’t impact any near-term growth and saying for a comparison how their growth in Canada, where Hulu does not exist, is nearly identical to their growth in the United States.
