The Criterion Channel has officially premiered the U.S. trailer for celebrated filmmaker Wong Kar Wai’s “Blossoms Shanghai”, which is finally making it Stateside. The boutique streamer will release the series starting on November 24th and running through the end of January.
The maker of celebrated movies such as “In the Mood for Love,” “Chungking Express,” and “Happy Together” hasn’t released a film in nearly a decade – his last being 2013’s “The Grandmaster”.
Now he finally returns as creator and director of 19 episodes of this 30-episode series, which follows a self-made millionaire in Shanghai during the 1990s – a man who rises from a young opportunist with a troubled past to the heights of the gilded city.
The project also serves as the third part of a ‘romantic trilogy’ of sorts alongside his masterpiece “In The Mood For Love” and the lesser-seen “2046”. It first aired in December 2023 in China.
Hu Ge, Ma Yili, Tang Yan, and Xin Zhilei star, and Wong directs this adaptation of Jin Yucheng’s award-winning novel, with Qin Wen adapting the script.
“Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” cinematographer Peter Pau served as lenser, and this international release will boast new colour grading and correction.
