After quietening down for a while, the Martin Scorsese vs. Marvel debate has taken a new turn as Disney chairman and chief executive officer Bob Iger has revealed his team and Scorsese’s team are arranging a meeting between the two to discuss the topics brought up by Scorsese in early October.
The initial story went viral after the celebrated filmmaker was quoted in an Empire interview comparing Marvel movies to theme parks. He later expanded on the topic of comic book films and tentpoles overpowering the exhibition space and leaving no room for smaller to medium fare.
In his interview with Time magazine which just named him businessperson of the year, Iger has brushed those comments off and points to “Black Panther” which “he considers one of his top five career achievements” according to the reporter.
Scorsese meanwhile is dominating awards season talk with “The Irishman”. What will be the outcome of this meeting? Who knows. But as yesterday showed with ‘The Last Jedi’, the debate never stops – only goes dormant for a while.
