The 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards were given out on Saturday afternoon in Santa Monica and already a couple of key moments have gone viral online. From Aubrey Plaza’s quips to the LA Gay Men’s Chorus singing what ultimately became a tribute to Laura Dern, it seemed like a fun night.
However it was Best Male Lead Actor winner Adam Sandler who stole the show with a memorable acceptance speech for winning the award for his work in “Uncut Gems”. The speech can be seen in its entirety below, though be warned that there’s some salty language.
In terms of the awards themselves, “The Farewell” took Best Feature, “Parasite” won Best International Feature, “American Factory” won Best Documentary, and “Booksmart” snagged Best First Feature. Benny Safdie & Josh Safdie won Best Director for “Uncut Gems,” Noah Baumbach took Best Screenplay for “Marriage Story,” and Fredrica Bailey & Stefon Bristol won for Best First Screenplay.
Renee Zellweger won for Best Female Lead Actor while Willem Dafoe (“The Lighthouse”) and Zhao Shuzhen (“The Farewell”) took the supporting honors. “The Lighthouse” took best cinematography, “Uncut Gems” took best editing, “Give Me Liberty” snagged the John Cassavetes award, Kelly Reichardt won the Bonnie Award, while “Marriage Story” scored the Robert Altman award.
