Rachel Zegler is attached to star as Cuban-born singer Gloria Estefan in a biopic about her based on the Broadway jukebox musical “On Your Feet” at Sony Pictures.
Lissette Feliciano (“Women Is Losers”) has been attached to write and direct the feature adaptation since April.
Estefan revealed the casting herself in an interview with The Sun, talking about where the project currently stands:
“I think she [Zegler] is awesome, I think she’s incredible. I know she’s killed it in ‘Evita’. We’re still working on the green light because we’re figuring out where to do it, how to do it. This has been in the works for quite a few years now. And that’s how it works.”
The project tells the true story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan – two Cuban immigrants who launched themselves to international musical stardom.
Premiering in 2015, the show follows Gloria’s early days in Miami, her breakthrough as lead singer of the Miami Sound Machine, and her return to the stage after a near-fatal accident.
It also explores the challenges she faced involving her own identity, ambitions and family, along with her romantic relationship with Emilio. The show features numerous global hit songs from Gloria Estefan, including “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” “Get On Your Feet,” “Conga,” “Reach,” “Coming Out of the Dark”, and more.
