New PS5 With External Disc Drive Coming?

Sony Interactive Ent.

A new report at the recently launched Insider Gaming indicates that Sony is planning to release a new version of its PlayStation 5 console in fiscal year 2023 – one with a detachable external disc drive.

Sony has produced three different chassis for the PS5 so far across, all internal revisions focused on cooling or weight with no change to the external appearance. This is said to be more significant and will reportedly “use a detachable disc drive connected to the central system with an additional USB-C port in the back of the console.”

The rest of the system is said to remain the same configuration with almost identical hardware. This new model will allegedly replace the separate disc and digital PS5 models that have been available since launch and will be phased out, according to the report.

So rather than producing two separate models, a single digital model will be produced with an optional drive either bought separately or bundled in. The size and shape of the new version, and whether it’s a potential ‘PS5 Slim’, is unclear.
