Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence is set to star in “Weapons” and “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger’s next film, the sci-fi thriller feature “The Flood” at New Line Cinema.
The property was famously set up at Netflix who tried to court Cregger to direct, but the two reached an impasse over the streamer not wanting to do a theatrical release – and Cregger wanted a firm one.
The film, and Cregger, ultimately ended up at Warner Bros. Pictures, where he’s opted to direct it rather than the “Weapons” spin-off “Gladys,” which he’s only producing.
Warner Bros Motion Picture chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy say in a statement:
“Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most gifted and compelling actors working today, and we are thrilled to have her at the center of Zach’s bold and wholly original vision for The Flood. Following our extraordinary experience together on Weapons, we could not be more excited to reunite with Zach and the team at Vertigo, as well as Amblin to bring this ambitious film to audiences around the world.”
“The Flood” follows a deep-space exploration team aboard the vessel Spiritus Mundi. They pick up a strange, recurring signal from a remote planet and investigate – only to discover a bizarre alien artifact that starts warping time, reality, and the crew’s minds.
Cregger wrote the script for the film in just five days. Steven Spielberg will produce the project that is set for an August 11th 2028 release.
The news comes as Cregger’s acclaimed “Resident Evil” film has just crossed $200 million worldwide and is on track to potentially overtake “Weapons” as his biggest hit to date.
