Earlier this year came the news that a sequel to 2007’s film adaptation of the famed Richard Matheson story “I Am Legend” was in the works.
The original is set years after a plague kills most of humanity and transforms the rest into monsters, with a sole immune survivor (Will Smith) in New York City.
At the time it was also announced Smith was set to return alongside Michael B. Jordan in the project. Akiva Goldsman would also be back to write and produce. Francis Lawrence helmed the original but no director was attached to the new one at that time.
Recently though, Lawrence spoke to ComicBook.com about his potential involvement with the project, saying he has talked to Goldsman and would love to direct again if offered:
“I have spoken to Akiva [Goldsman] a little bit about it, but I think that is still a ways away. I’d love to do it. I’ve heard some things about I Am Legend. We actually don’t have much, just brainstorming things for Constantine, but I’m sworn to secrecy on I Am Legend.”
The original film grossed $585 million worldwide and became the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2007.
