James Gunn’s “Superman” film has now passed $300 million domestically and $513 million worldwide, with the title still going strong in various markets.
Gunn himself previously teased he’s already working on the script for something he says is not strictly a Superman sequel, nor is it a Batman vs. Superman/World’s Finest project.
A new posting on Threads, Gunn responded to a fan asking what he was currently working on and said: “Peacemaker press!! And sequel writing!”. Then asked if he would tease the “Superman” sequel, he added, “I just did!”.
That led to a flurry of speculation this morning regarding a potential “Superman 2” announcement, rumors now cut short with Gunn explaining this is the same movie he mentioned before: “Yes, yes, sorry. This is the same movie. Superman has a major role. It’s not ‘Superman 2.'”
Asked when we’ll get an official confirmation about what his project is, he says it’s still “a ways off.” Meanwhile, “Metal Gear Solid” and “Death Stranding” creator Hideo Kojima has weighed in on X with his approval of the film after only being able to see it this week.
The talk comes as DVDs Release Dates, a website with a very good track record of digital release date estimates, including the “Sinners” release date long before anyone else, has claimed that “Superman” will be hitting PVOD on August 15th. Previous estimates had it hitting on August 26th.
If true, it could arrive around 35 days after release (5 weeks), which is a few days earlier than expected. In terms of other Warner Bros. releases, the gap between cinema release and PVOD release has varied from as little as 3 weeks to up to 7 weeks. “Alto Knights” was 21 days, “Mickey 17” was 32 days, “A Minecraft Movie” was 39 days and “Sinners” was 46 days.
Warner Bros. Pictures and its home entertainment division have yet to officially announce any digital or home video dates for the film at this time, though a late August release window seems highly likely.
