In the wake of the “Peacemaker” first season premiere, DC Studios chief James Gunn has spoken some more about the new DCU and complications with canon.
As previously reported, the season premiere begins with a ‘Previously On’ recap that includes the first season finale scene with the DCEU Justice League, but having been reshot to replace them with the DCU’s Justice Gang.
There’s also another scene in the recap where a name drop of a character is added in. Speaking with TV Insider, Gunn says there are no plans to retcon the first season on streaming or other platforms:
“No, unfortunately I’d have to change too many little things throughout Season 1, and it would cost too much money, and I’d rather just give that money to a few more CGI shots of superheroes.
But I think that we deal with it. We say, canon is really Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker Season 2. I’d love for people to watch Season 1. Obviously, we’re changing that one thing, but we’re not gonna go back and reshoot all of it for Season 1, at least not at this point.
At some point, I’d love to [George] Lucas the s— out of it, but right now I don’t have the money.”
The second season of “Peacemaker” will continue to air weekly through October 9th on HBO Max. The first season is currently available in full on the streamer.
