George Lucas Has ‘Moved Past’ “Star Wars”

Lucasfilm

Thirteen years ago, filmmaker George Lucas sold off his production company Lucasfilm to Disney in a deal worth $4 billion.

From that point, “Star Wars” and the perception of the franchise has changed as Disney’s attempts to exploit the property have been met with mixed success both critically and commercially. The fandom certainly is more polarised than it has ever been.

But what about Lucas himself? The 81-year-old is happily retired and, in a new interview with The Wall Street Journal, says that he has moved on from the franchise:

“Disney took it over and they gave it their vision. That’s what happens. Of course, I’ve moved past it. I mean, I’ve got a life.”

Lucas himself has been vocal about his issues with the direction the franchise has gone since selling it off, but seems nonplussed about it now as he’s pursued other things.

That includes the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, set to open next year, which he and his wife Mellody Hobson have spent the better part of the last decade establishing.

Costing roughly $1 billion, the LA museum boasts 33 galleries, with just one dedicated to “Star Wars”. He says: “It’s one gallery out of 33. And I did it grudgingly. I didn’t want people to come to the museum and say, ‘Where’s the Star Wars?’”
