The proposed “Empire” spin-off that would follow Taraji P. Henson’s Cookie Lyon character has been scrapped by FOX.
The project was announced as beginning development back in July and was part of a first-look deal Henson had signed with studio 20th Television.
“Empire” co-creator Danny Strong was attached to write the series alongside Stacy A. Littlejohn and Yolonda Lawrence, with Sanaa Hamri on board to direct. Lee Daniels served as an executive producer as was Henson, Brian Grazer and Samie Falvey.
The project will now be shopped to other outlets. One complication is 20th Television which has been acquired by Disney and which retains ownership of the show – as a result FOX has no real stake in the “Empire” franchise anymore.
The final episodes of “Empire”aired earlier this year.
