FOX has decided not to renew both its “X-Men” spin-off series “The Gifted” or its comedy “Rel” after two seasons and one season respectively.
“The Gifted” is produced by Marvel Television, which currently has series like “Runaways” and “Cloak and Dagger” on Disney-owned Freeform and Disney-controlled Hulu. There have been no real conversations at this point but there reportedly is a slim chance for “The Gifted” to live on in the Disney family.
“The Gifted” was a low performer in linear ratings for FOX, the second season averaged a 1.1 rating in Live+7 – half the numbers of its first season. With FOX no longer owning its series, linear ratings will play a much bigger role in their renewal decisions from now on.
Multi-cam comedy “Rel” starring Lil Rel Howery premiered to strong numbers which dived after the premiere – the season pulled an average rating of 0.77 and a dash over 2 million total viewers per episode.
Fox has already renewed “The Resident,” “9-1-1” and much of its animation line-up for the Fall. “Gotham” ends this month, the fates of “Empire” and “Lethal Weapon” are still to be determined, and while “The Orville” hasn’t been renewed yet the indications are it’s getting a third season.
