Just days after attached star Keanu Reeves left the project, filmmaker Todd Field has also exited Hulu’s series adaptation of Erik Larson’s “The Devil in the White City”.

“Tár” director Field was to serve as director and executive producer of the series which has been in development at Hulu since 2019 and was officially ordered to series in August.

Set against the backdrop of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, the series tells the true story of demanding but visionary architect Daniel H. Burnham, and America’s first modern serial killer Dr. H. H. Holmes who was behind the notorious ‘Murder Castle’ built in the Fair’s shadow.

The project has been in the works, on and off for two decades with Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio attached at different points to star in a film adaptation.

DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Rick Yorn, Jennifer Davisson, Stacy Sher, Sam Shaw, Lila Byock and Mark Lafferty serve as executive producers on the series with Shaw adapting the book for ABC Signature and Paramount Television Studios.
