This past weekend saw the release of “Honey Don’t,” the third solo film of director Ethan Coen following his professional split from his brother Joel Coen.
The pair directed eighteen movies together from 1984 to 2018 before going off to do projects on their own. Joel has only released one film so far, 2021’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” with a second titled “Jack of Spades” shooting in Scotland this year.
Ethan Coen did a Jerry Lee Lewis doco, before helming last year’s “Drive-Away Dolls” and this past weekend’s “Honey Don’t,” both of which scored mixed reviews, with the latter in particular a dud on arrival.
In the wake of the release, only two aspects of the film are being talked about online – leaked video from the film of star Chris Evans in a jockstrap, and more high-minded discussions about the Coen’s filmography and where things sit.
World of Reel has conducted a poll of around 100 critics, myself included, to name their three greatest Coen Brothers films. Scores are then assigned and tabulated.
The clear winner was “Fargo” with 57 votes followed by “No Country for Old Men” with 46. Then there’s a gap with “A Serious Man” (28), “The Big Lebowski” (27) and “Miller’s Crossing” (23) rounding out the top five.
Four films – “Intolerable Cruelty,” “The Ladykillers,” “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,’ and “Hail Caesar” – didn’t land a single vote. Click here for the full list.
