Disney Scraps Plans For “Blossom” Reboot

NBC

Mayim Bialik has confirmed that the long-gestating reboot of 1990s sitcom “Blossom” is no longer moving forward at Disney.

In a blog post, the actress and former “Jeopardy!” host said that it was “not for lack of trying”. Rather, a combination of industry-wide mergers and a new executive regime didn’t see much merit in the project.

Word broke in early 2023 that show creator Don Reo had completed a script for the pilot of a single-camera reboot of the property. All the cast was in, but there was also a lot of red tape at Disney to cut through.

The original series ran from 1991 to 1995 on NBC and is now available on Hulu. It followed a teenage girl navigating life while living with her single father (Ted Wass) and two older brothers (Joey Lawrence, Michael Stoyanov).

The plan wasn’t to do a direct sequel with a similar tone (ala “Fuller House”), rather one that would look at the characters in a whole new way. A first pitch went well which is why they spoke about it in 2023, but scheduling commitments prevented it.

When they tried again last year, Disney told them it was “no longer able to be produced” according to TV Line. Attempts to obtain the series rights were declined.
