“Devil Wears Prada 2” Trailer Draws Views, Debate

20th Century Studios

20th Century Studios launched the full trailer for “The Devil Wears Prada 2” this week, and with it came some apparently record-breaking numbers.

The clip reportedly pulled in 222 million views in its first 24 hours according to Film Updates, making it the biggest trailer debut in 20th Century Studios history, outdoing the teaser that racked up 185 million views in its opening day.

A 222 million launch puts the trailer in the top 10 of all time and about on par with the teaser for the live-action “The Lion King” film.

However, the trailer has also drawn some debate, such as some arguing whether the dismissive jokes by Miranda (Meryl Streep) are a sign of early on-set dementia.

The bigger topic being discussed, however, is how the look of the film has changed as the original was shot on film and the sequel on digital, resulting in a much darker and seemingly softer image. Some have put it down to the lighting more than the technology.

Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci are all returning and are joined by Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, Pauline Chalamet, Tracie Thoms, Tibor Feldman, B.J. Novak, and Conrad Ricamora.

The sequel is expected to follow Priestly as she navigates her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing. The film opens May 1st.
