One element J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” brought up but never really developed was that of the Knights of Ren. The hooded cohorts of Ben Solo/Kylo Ren appear in the film as mute henchmen with not much in the way of back story.
It turns out Marvel Entertainment’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren” comic book series is going to answer those questions. Heat Vision reports that the recently released second issue of Charles Soule and Will Sliney’s series considerably fleshes out Adam Driver’s character.
Said comic reveals that Ben Solo met the Knights of Ren years before he turned against Luke Skywalker and the burgeoning Jedi Order, while exploring a Jedi outpost on the planet Elphrona alongside Skywalker and Lon Sen Tekka. The fight between Skywalker and the seven Knights of Ren ends in a stalemate, with their leader Ren inviting Ben Solo to join them before leaving.
Years later, after Solo destroys Skywalker’s Jedi temple, he returns to Elphrona at the bidding of Snoke to find the Knights and Ren reveals that he knows Snoke. It’s expected the remaining issues with deal with Solo’s induction into the Knights and Snoke’s roll in Solo’s pre-Force Awakens life.
The comic also reportedly mentions the ‘High Republic Era,’ a time of expansionism for the Jedi several centuries before the prequels. That period was rumored last week to be a potential setting for the next wave of “Star Wars” films.
