Actress Linda Cardellini has praised the new “Scooby-Doo” animated movie “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” for officially making the character of Velma a lesbian.
Cardellini played the character in the two James Gunn-penned live-action films and voiced the character’s rival in the series “Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated”. Out doing press for the third and final season of Netflix’s dark comedy “Dead to Me,” she tells Entertainment Weekly that the film’s inclusion is great:
“Velma has been around since 1969. I just went trick or treating with my daughter, and there were a lot of Velmas out there, so I love that she still has this place in the culture that is sort of always active for decades. I think [her orientation has] been hinted at so many times, and I think it’s great that it’s finally out there.”
Fans have long speculated about Velma’s sexuality, something Gunn himself has previously indicated he tried to make explicit in the live-action films – but the studio wouldn’t let him.
Cardellini was also asked if she would return as Velma in a third “Scooby-Doo” movie, to which she responded: “Oh God, yeah! [But] I’m probably too old.”
