“Avengers Endgame: Encore” Made $86 Million

Marvel Studios and Disney re-released 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” in cinemas this weekend, and it teased just how big the appetite for the next entry in the series is.

Despite the film being seven years old and easily available on many platforms, it still managed to pull in $86 million worldwide this weekend – $26 million domestic and $60 million overseas.

That’s a truly exceptional take for a re-release, the third-best domestic start for a re-release behind only 1997’s “Star Wars: Special Edition” re-release at $35.9 million and 2011’s “The Lion King 3D” at $30.2 million. It’s the second-best foreign debut for a re-release behind the $67 million for “Titanic 3D” in 2012.

Around 14% of its cume came from IMAX screens. After this weekend, the lifetime worldwide take for “Avengers: Endgame” moves up to $2.885 billion – around $35 million behind the $2.92 billion of #1 placeholder “Avatar”.

Second place both domestically and worldwide was the second weekend of Zach Cregger’s “Resident Evil” with $23.3 million domestically (a drop of 61%) and $27 million overseas with its worldwide total now at $196.5 million.

The Brad Pitt-led “Heart of the Beast” was the biggest of the newcomers, coming in third place with $20 million domestically and $30.1 million overseas.

Fourth domestically was the Robert Pattinson-led “Primetime” with $19.1 million – that film is oddly holding back much of its international release by a month, so the few overseas markets that got it contributed just $1.2 million.

“Forgotten Island” rounded out the domestic top five with $12.8 million domestic and $5.4 million overseas. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” finally dropped out of the top five, falling into seventh place with $4.1 million domestically and a $950.7 million total.
