Apple TV

First reported on three weeks ago, Apple TV and Legendary Entertainment have now made it official – they are expanding the MonsterVerse franchise with a prequel TV series.

The new show will see Wyatt Russell reprising his “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” first-season role of the younger Colonel Lee Shaw, with writer/producer Joby Harold set to serve as showrunner on the new series.

The series is reportedly just one of an ‘expanding slate’ of series coming out of Legendary’s “MonsterVerse”. It will be set during the Cold War and grapple with tensions between the United States and Russia in a world of monsters.

Set in 1984, two years after Shaw’s return through the rift. He heads out on a secret mission behind enemy lines in an attempt to stop the Soviets from unleashing a horrific new Titan big enough to destroy the U.S. and turn the tide of the Cold War.

Harold, Russell, Tory Tunnell, Chris Black, Kyle Bradstreet, Alex Boden, Max Borenstein and Andy Goddard executive produce.

Harold has also closed an overall deal with Legendary, under which he will oversee the company’s entire ‘MonsterVerse’ franchise. Harold says in a statement: “I could not feel more privileged to be a part of building out this wildly iconic universe. Apple and Legendary have been exemplary partners throughout this process, and we will continue to bring these Titans of cinematic history to audiences with the reverence they deserve.:

The second season of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” which sees Kurt Russell return as the older Lee Shaw, returns on February 27th.
