Akira Creator Plans New Series Third Film

Famed anime creator Otomo Katsuhiro, the director of “Akira” and “Steamboy,” was the subject of some major announcements yesterday as part of the Anime Expo in Los Angeles.

First up it is confirmed that a new animated series based on the Eisner Award-winning “Akira” manga and anime is on the way with Sunrise Inc. announcing the project. In addition, a new 4K HDR remastered Blu-ray set of the original anime film will be released both in Japan and the US. A North American date hasn’t been revealed but it will arrive in Japan on April 24th next year.

Sunrise is also teaming up with Otomo for “Orbital Era,” a near-future set action-adventure film following young boys living in a space colony under construction. Otomo says: “The reality found in mankind’s future will be depicted through their perspective.”

It will mark Otomo’s third feature and he is reportedly committed to writing, designing and directing the picture. No production schedule was revealed. Finally, manga publisher Kodansha also plans to release an “Otomo: The Complete Works” retrospective publication which Otomo will personally edit and organize.
