A24 is reportedly on track to win the film and TV rights to “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” franchise reports The Insneider.
The rights to the property were up for auction with a handful of bidders involved. While a deal hasn’t closed as yet, A24 reportedly has pole position.
Multiple pitches were made for the property, and if the A24 deal closes, then several of those pitches are no longer in play. That includes ones produced by Taylor Sheridan, Oz Perkins at NEON, and a short-lived one from Jordan Peele at Universal.
One that would still very much be alive would be a TV series that JT Mollner, Roy Lee and Glen Powell would produce, but Powell won’t star in. A potential Netflix movie with Lee producing is also reportedly still a possibility.
Exurbia Films is the primary production company behind the franchise with Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel and Kim Henkel as producers.
The original 1974 film remains an iconic work of horror, though the franchise has been laden with numerous unnecessary sequels and prequels along with a whole lot of messy, contradictory continuity.
The highest-grossing instalment remains the 2003 reboot produced by Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. That grossed $107 million worldwide.
