Gunn Celebrates “Clayface” CinemaScore

Warner Bros. Pictures

While the critics were mixed/positive on the film, audience reaction to “Clayface” has been very strong – doing numbers much higher than the critics.

That includes audience exit polls, with the film’s CinemaScore revealed to be an ‘A-‘, a very good grade generally and equal first in Gunn’s DCU – “Superman” also got an A-.

Compared to other DC properties, “The Batman,” “Man of Steel” and “Aquaman” are on the same grade while Nolan’s entire Batman trilogy and the first “Wonder Woman” sit higher with ‘A’.

However, it’s a rare score for a horror feature, as they’re often in the ‘C’ grade with audiences judging them more harshly. DC Studios chief James Gunn celebrated the news, posting on Threads:

“Really proud of this. Sinners is the only horror movie to have EVER gotten an A Cinemascore, and only three horror movies have gotten an A- in the last couple years – Obsession, Weapons, and, now, Clayface. As always, all praise goes to James, Mike, Hossein, Tom, Naomi and the whole gang.”

The good grade carries over to Rotten Tomatoes where it has a 95% audience score, while PostTrak had it at 4½ stars. With a cost of just $44 million, the film is tracking for a $25 million domestic start with 73% of the audience aged 18-34.
