The Golden Globes’ awards committee has finally drawn a line about what can be dubbed a ‘musical/comedy’ with this year’s “Michael” reportedly rejected from the category.
Gold Derby broke the news, saying the submission into the ‘Best Comedy/Musical’ category by distributor Lionsgate has been rejected by the awards committee.
Under the rules, a film must meet the criteria in which “a musical can be a comedy or a drama in which songs are used in addition to spoken dialogue to further the plot.”
According to the site’s sources, the musical performances in “Michael” did not meet that criterion of driving the narrative.
Lionsgate is reportedly debating whether to appeal the decision ahead of the October 31st submission deadline. If they don’t, then the film will have to deal with the more competitive drama categories where other blockbusters like “The Odyssey” and “Dune: Part Three” are expected to dominate.
Other recent musical biopics like “A Complete Unknown” and “Elvis” have been submitted as dramas.
The Globes have been infamous for some questionable inclusions in the ‘musical/comedy’ category in the past, including “The Martian,” “Get Out” and this year’s “Obsession”.
