It’s a busy October weekend at the box-office with multiple releases this week doing varying levels of success.
At the top is “Street Fighter,” the film adaptation of the Capcom video game which is coming in on the softer side of expectations with a $31 million domestic opening weekend.
The film is pulling in a lot of men over 35, nearly half of its business. So much so that it’s impacting the other major wide release this weekend – “Whalefall”.
Despite better reviews than most wide releases this month, “Whalefall” is coming in well below projections. Its opening weekend is looking to be just $7.5 million, instead of the $10-12 million tracking suggested earlier this week, and a fourth-place start.
Dominating the conversation is the doco “You Can See Everything,” which is exceeding expectations. Despite releasing on a limited footprint of 855 screens, around one-quarter of “Street Fighter,” it’s managed to debut in second place with the number expected to be around $13 million. Critical reviews have been stellar.
The horror film “Other Mommy,” which won last weekend, is dying a very quick death. The poorly reviewed film looks set to drop 72% in its second weekend for a $7.85 million take and managing to land in third place.
The new take on “Sense and Sensibility” rounds out the top five with $6.7 million. One other release of note is the restored cut of Ken Russell’s “The Devils” which will debut in eleventh place with $1.64 million from 350 screens along with earning universal acclaim amongst critics.
