Marvel: We Knew “Daredevil” Was Ending

Marvel

A few weeks back came the official word – the upcoming third season of Marvel Studios’ “Daredevil: Born Again” will be the show’s last.

The news surprised fans, but Marvel Television chief Brad Winderbaum has revealed that this was the plan and the writers/producers crafted the final run with that in mind, and it wasn’t due to recent shifts in Marvel’s overall TV strategy.

Speaking on Brandon Davis’ Main Character podcast, Winderbaum also leaves the door open for the potential return of some of the characters down the line:

“I think that it got conflated with a few things, but the plan was always to make a third season. The plan was to culminate at three because the way we were looking at it, the original series is three seasons. ‘Born Again,’ three seasons. They’re kind of like trade paperbacks, you know, or collections that you can slot into your shelf as, you know, these are two three-volume sets, and then we’ll take a breath and then figure out what’s next.”

The news last month also revealed that showrunner Dario Scardapane would not return after his contract expired. While Winderbaum didn’t comment on that, he acknowledged how hard it is to keep plans under wraps these days:

“You never want the behind-the-scenes story to ever be told, and especially in this day and age, you know, sometimes it just drives the news. I think the Season 3 story kind of just hit the audience when it did. The information got out when it did, and we’re just trying to make the thing.”

Winderbaum confirmed that the final run is drawing major inspiration from the celebrated “Devil in Cell-Block D” storyline, which finds Matt Murdock incarcerated with some of his enemies.

The third and final season of “Daredevil: Born Again” hits Disney+ in 2027.
