DC Studios and Warner Bros. premiered “Clayface” last night, and so far reactions from the screening have been quite positive, far more than with “Supergirl” a few months back.
DC Studios chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran were both on hand on the red carpet and have talked about both existing and possible projects in DC’s future.
Safran spoke with Deadline where he confirmed that James Mangold’s slowly gestating “Swamp Thing” film is not just alive but actively being worked on:
“We’re working on it, absolutely. The script is being written as we speak. But it’s something we’re excited about. All these things take time – when you’ve already got a filmmaker involved, you’ve got to wait for their window [of availability] as well.”
Mangold’s project was first revealed back when DC Studios announced their slate at the start of 2023 but he was occupied with other projects at the time, notably post-production on “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” along with filming on his Bob Dylan film “A Complete Unknown”.
Recently, it was revealed that Mangold’s “Star Wars” project, essentially an origin story for the Jedi, was indefinitely stalled at Lucasfilm, which led to suggestions he would get back to work on this. Sounds like he has.
Mangold has previously teased that, like “Clayface,” it will be a “simple, clean, Gothic horror movie about this man/monster” and be essentially standalone in nature.
At the same premiere, Gunn spoke with Hola! USA and was asked what Batman animated incarnations could be turned into films. He said “Batman Beyond” certainly “Could be a good movie”.
“Clayface” opens next Friday.
