Viola Prettejohn (“The Crown,” “The Nevers”) and Emmy nominee David Oyelowo (“Selma,” “Lawmen: Bass Reeves”) are set to lead Sky’s new TV adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling novel “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”.
The story will adapt the first of the Millennium trilogy of novels and moves the story to the modern day. It follows cancelled star journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Oyelowo) and uncompromising hacker Lisbeth Salander (Prettejohn) as they investigate the now over three decades old disappearance of Harriet Vanger.
Vanger was a young woman who vanished more than three decades ago from the secluded island home of one of Sweden’s most powerful industrial dynasties. As they delve deeper into the Vanger family’s buried past, their investigation draws them closer to a chilling threat unfolding dangerously close to them in the present.
The property has already been adapted to the screen twice – first as the 2009 Swedish-language film that launched the career of Noomi Rapace as Salander, and again in 2011 by filmmaker David Fincher with Rooney Mara in the Salander role and Daniel Craig as Blomkvist.
Rapace played the part two more times in adaptations of the subsequent books in the original trilogy. Another “The Crown” star, Claire Foy, played her in Fede Álvarez’s 2018 adaptation of “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” one of the sequel trilogy books ghostwritten by David Lagercrantz.
Sony Pictures Television and Left Bank Pictures are producing the new take which, with its full series runtime, aims to explore parts of the story the previous films didn’t including a lot more exploration of the Vanger family.
Shooting begins in Lithuania next month.
