Netflix and Hasbro Entertainment have begun development of “Ravenloft,” a live-action TV series based within the “Dungeons & Dragons” universe and set to be executive produced by filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón (“Gravity,” “Y Tu Mama Tambien”).
The project is completely separate from “The Forgotten Realms,” a live-action series also set in the “Dungeons & Dragons” universe that began development at Netflix in early 2025. That project, which Shawn Levy was slated to executive produce, is no longer in the works at the streamer.
The character-driven prestige supernatural fantasy series blends adventure with gothic horror, dark magic and tragic romance.
The series follows the making of the vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich, whose story of power, love, obsession, and undead transformation charts his origins from tragic antihero to one of the franchise’s most notorious villains.
Writer/executive producer John August, who co-wrote many Tim Burton films like “Corpse Bride” and “Frankenweenie,” is also on board the TV series in those capacities, while Gabriel Marano, Richard Schwartz, and Gaby Rodriguez also executive produce.
Introduced in 1983 by Tracy and Laura Hickman, Ravenloft has become one of the most played Dungeons & Dragons settings and spawned more than a hundred official novels along with video games and companion rulebooks.
