Third “Knives Out” Theatrical Run Scaled Back

Netflix

While the first “Knives Out” scored a full theatrical release, the sequel “Glass Onion” was at Netflix and so sadly only scored a one-week limited theatrical release over Thanksgiving in 2022 before airing that December on the streamer.

It was the widest ever release for a Netflix film at the time, the title hitting around 600 screens and generating $13.1 million in its opening five days.

The hope was that the third film in the series, “Wake Up Dead Man,” would be able to secure a bigger or at least a longer run in cinemas. That’s not the case it would appear.

Empire City Box Office (via World of Reel) is reporting that Netflix has significantly scaled back its theatrical plans for the film. The release will reportedly be far smaller than its predecessor and no box office grosses will be reported.

That’s not going to make director Rian Johnson happy, the filmmaker saying a while back he “wants this in as many theaters for as long as possible” and he plans to “push for everything we can get in terms of theatrical, because I want as many people as possible to see it in that form.”

Either way, the film will have some screenings with the movie’s world premiere at TIFF taking place next month.
