Wiseman On “Underworld” Series, “Ballerina”

Screen Gems/Sony Pictures

The “Underworld” franchise turned twenty this year, the film series painted an ongoing war between vampires and werewolves (Lycans) with each camp led by the likes of Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen respectively.

Co-created by filmmaker Len Wiseman who directed the first (and best) two entries, the five movies in total ultimately grossed $539 million against a combined budget of $207 million.

Though the franchise has been dormant for years, Wiseman was recently asked about any attempts to revive or continue it with either a reboot or sequel.

In an interview with EW about the original film’s anniversary, Wiseman suggests that the proposed television series announced long ago is still in the works.

Asked about the franchise’s future, he says: “There is a fashion that is in the works. I can’t talk about it, but there is a future to Underworld for sure.” Then asked about the talk surrounding the TV series a few years back, he responded: “That’s the one I’m referring to.”

More recently Wiseman has been working on the “John Wick” spin-off “Ballerina” with Ana de Armas. Asked where that film currently stands he says:

“We’re on a pause right now, but I’ve just finished the director’s cut. Had an amazing shoot. It’s a really fun movie.”

He then goes on to compare de Armas’ role in the film to her memorable appearance as Paloma in the 2021 James Bond film “No Time to Die,” saying: “That’s exactly what we’re going to do. You like her for 15 minutes? Well, you’ll love her for two hours!”

“Ballerina” is expected out in cinemas next year.
