Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” swam her way to a major debut on the Disney+ service according to the studio themselves.
The film had its debut on the streamer this past Wednesday, September 6th and has reportedly tallied 16 million views in its first five days.
That would make it the most-viewed premiere on the platform since the “Hocus Pocus” sequel last year. Disney defines views as total stream time divided by runtime, the same way Netflix reports its audience data.
The film, which cost a budget of around $250–265 million, snagged a total of $569.5 million at the global box-office and is the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2023. It received mixed reviews from critics.
This marks the second time Disney has shared audience figures lately, they did so last month following the premiere of “Star Wars: Ahsoka” which pulled in 14 million views in its first week and was the top series worldwide on the platform.
Up next for Disney on the live-action remake front is “Snow White” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” next year along with the “Moana” and “Lilo & Stitch” movies at some point soon.
