Disney+ has scrapped its plans for “Nautilus,” the ten-epispde UK live-action series inspired by Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” which was already shot early last year in Australia.
Former “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Spooks” and “Penny Dreadful” alum Shazad Latif stars as Captain Nemo alongside Luke Arnold, Cameron Cuffe, Jacob Collins-Levy, Georgia Flood, Thierry Frémont and Caroline Goodall.
The story serves as an origin story of Nemo who, in this take, is an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family and a prisoner of the East India Company.
He’s a man bent on revenge against the forces which have taken everything from him. But once he sets sail with his ragtag crew on board the awe-inspiring Nautilus, he not only battles with his enemy, he also discovers a magical underwater world.
The project was commissioned back in 2021, and the decision to drop it is part of Disney’s streaming content removal plan unveiled in May. The company is taking an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion.
It joins Saturday’s news of the similarly already shot “The Spiderwick Chronicles” series adaptation also being dropped by Disney+ as part of the same cost-cutting measures.
Like with that show, Disney+ is working with the production team to find a new home for “Nautilus”. Meetings and screenings of episodes are now underway to find it a new home.
