Fox On A “Back to the Future” Reboot

Universal Pictures

Actor Michael J. Fox says he’s at peace with the idea of “Back to the Future” getting a reboot someday.

The actor has been out promoting his new Apple TV+ feature documentary “Still”, which deals with his battle against Parkinson’s disease, which he was diagnosed with in 1991 at age 29. That film premiered on the service on Friday.

Speaking with Variety for a recent cover story on his life and career, Fox is aware that someday someone will probably do a new incarnation of the three Robert Zemeckis-directed 1980s films about his character Marty McFly and a time-traveling DeLorean.

Fox says: “I’m not fanatical. Do what you want. It’s your movie. I got paid already” when asked about the possibility. He does, however, advise that whoever is thinking of doing it – it’s probably not a good idea as he doesn’t see a point to it:

“I don’t think it [a reboot] needs to be. I think Bob [Zemeckis] and Bob [Gale, co-writer] have been really smart about that. I don’t think it needs rebooting because are you going to clarify something? You’re going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it.”

Asked if he was ever approached about a potential fourth film after the trilogy wrapped, Fox said:

“I’m sure somebody thought about it. But I was in the early stages of Parkinson’s at that point, so I don’t know that I would have wanted to take that on. Right after ‘Part Three’ had done well, there might have been conversations about it, but I never got involved in them.”

Both Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale have been against remakes or edits to the original trilogy in the past. The property, however, has been reimagined as a musical.
