Sony Pictures has won a major bidding war for “I Tonya” and “Cruella” director Craig Gillespie’s GameStop short squeeze narrative feature “Dumb Money” at Black Bear Pictures.
Sony has committed to the U.S. and several international markets in a deal worth close to $20 million and plans to push the film theatrically.
Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan, Pete Davidson and Shailene Woodley have been cast in the film which is currently in production and is based on author Ben Mezrich’s book “The Antisocial Network”.
The story will deal with the fortunes made and lost overnight in the David vs Goliath GameStop short squeeze which made headlines last year.
The film aims to offer an irreverent and scathing portrait of how a loosely affiliated group of amateur investors and internet denizens crushed one of the biggest hedge funds on Wall Street.
Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum adapted the script while Gillespie, Aaron Ryder and Teddy Schwarzman produce.
