Warner Bros.’ Pictures’ “The Suicide Squad” is leading a subdued box-office this weekend with the R-rated superhero film now coming in decidedly below expectations.
Despite strong critical and audience reviews, the film isn’t expected to gross over $30-35 million in its first weekend as predicted. Instead, it’s on track for a $26.5 million haul following a $12 million result on Friday.
Even so it’s still set to top the box office by a margin of around $10 million. The rise of COVID-19’s Delta variant has raised concerns about movie attendance in the United States. Gunn’s film also offers the option stream from the comfort of one’s homes on HBO Max, and is very R-rated which does limit its potential audience.
Internationally “The Suicide Squad” added another $35 million from 70 overseas territories and now has a global tally of $72.2 million. With a budget of $185 million, it’s an uphill battle but the strong reviews from critics and audiences will potentially help.
Disney’s “The Jungle Cruise,” based on the theme park ride of the same name, will come in second and is expected to pull in an additional $15.7 million. “Old” will likely be third with another $4.1 million. The latter has made $65 million of an $18 million budget. Matt Damon-led “Stillwater” came in fifth with a further $2.86 million.
