Filmmakers may bristle at it, exhibitors are terrified of it – but there is little question – offer day-and-date movies and people will pay for your streaming service.

A new pair of THR/Morning Consult polls were conducted in late February. They found that 90% of HBO Max subscribers, and 64% of those who weren’t, were more likely to purchase a streaming service subscription if it included newly released films the same day they are in theaters for no extra cost.

Another found that movies would also be the biggest draw for the Paramount+ service. While only 29% said they are likely to subscribe to Paramount+, 35% of people said they would be more likely to subscribe in order to watch upcoming Paramount films like “Mission: Impossible 7” or “Top Gun: Maverick”.

In addition, Paramount Pictures was seen as the most desirable ViacomCBS property as 49% said they would be more likely to subscribe if the service included more film and TV content from that studio – compared to 41% for CBS and 34% for Nickelodeon.

Respondents said they would pay between $13-17 per month for a streamer that included day-and-date movies, and they would pay an additional fee of between $9 and $17 for day-and-date movies.

ViacomCBS hasn’t yet indicated that it will make its films available day-and-day on Paramount+ beyond its current “SpongeBob” animated film. For now, its big new releases are targeting a streaming release on the service 30-45 days after they appear in cinemas.
