“Eilish,” “Princess,” “Care,” “Call” All Acquired

A couple of key acquisition deals announced today. First, the new documentary feature “Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry” has set a February 2021 release date in cinemas and on the Apple TV+ service. R.J. Cutler (“The War Room,” “The September Issue”) helms the project which follows the acclaimed teenage singer virtually everywhere over the past few years.

Next, Gravitas Ventures has picked up the North American rights to director Van Maximilian Carlson’s “Princess of the Row”, with a planned November 27th theatrical and video-on-demand release set. Edi Gathegi, Martin Sheen, Tayler Buck, Ana Ortiz and Jacob Vargas starrer about a 12-year-old girl in foster care who wants to live with her homeless, mentally ill father on Los Angeles’ Skid Row. Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary executive produce.

Then, Netflix has snagged the J Blakeson-directed dark comic satire “I Care a Lot” out of Toronto for a deal worth near $10 million. The story follows a steely con woman (Rosamund Pike) who targets the elderly, becomes their legal guardian and dumps them in homes whilst siphoning off their assets. She meets her match against her newest mark’s friend (Peter Dinklage) who is as lawless and ruthless as she is. Eiza Gonzalez and Chris Messina also star.

Finally, Sony Pictures Television has acquired global distribution rights to the documentary “Who You Gonna Call?” about the life of Grammy-winning singer Ray Parker Jr. – famous for penning the iconic “Ghostbusters” song. Fran Strine helms the project dealing with Parker’s youth on the racially charged streets of Detroit in the 1960s to his rise in music touring with Stevie Wonder and The Rolling Stones at just 18.
