In the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests, the eighth season of NBC’s beloved police comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” is being retooled.
Speaking with Access Daily, series star Terry Crews says showrunner Dan Goor: “had four episodes all ready to go and they just threw them in the trash… We have to start over. Right now we don’t know which direction it’s going to go in.”
The decision was not a sudden thing by Goor either as cast and crew of the NBC show sat down to discuss how the comedy can adapt to the changing political and cultural landscape. Crews says:
“We’ve had a lot of somber talks about it and deep conversations and we hope through this we’re going to make something that will be truly groundbreaking this year. We have an opportunity and we plan to use it in the best way possible.”
Indeed, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” stands as a series that could weather the storm better than many. Along with a highly diverse cast, the show has tackled issues of police brutality along with systemic racism and homophobia both between police and the larger community and within the police force itself.
Goor told Buzzfeed this week: “Our particular squad – our heroes – we’ve always made sure are good cops and model the kind of behavior and techniques that we would hope all cops exhibit.”
Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio, Terry Crews, Dirk Blocker and Joel McKinnon Miller are all expected to return for the new season.
