Celebrated British actor Ian Holm, best known for his roles in “Alien” and “The Lord of the Rings,” has passed away at the age of 88. His death has been attributed to a Parkinson’s related illness.
Holm had a long career in theatre but quit in 1976 after he experienced severe stage fright during a performance. He made his Hollywood debut in Ridley Scott’s “Alien” as the android Ash before going on to score an Oscar nomination for his work as maverick athletics coach Sam Mussabini in “Chariots of Fire”.
He went on to appear in a number of famed films including “Time Bandits,” “Brazil,” “The Fifth Element,” “Dreamchild,” “The Madness Of King George,” “The Sweet Hereafter” and “From Hell” to name only a few. He found fame again playing the elderly Bilbo Baggins in both “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies with “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” marking his last on screen appearance.
Our sincerest condolences go out to his friends and family and many fans.
