“The Cabin in the Woods” and “Bad Times at the El Royale” writer/director Drew Goddard is in talks to head back into space for “Project Hail Mary” at MGM.
Goddard previously scored an Oscar nomination for his work adapting the script of author Andy Weir’s novel “The Martian” into the Ridley Scott film of the same name.
Now Goddard is in talks to at least pen the story and possibly the script for this take on a new space-set novel by Weir which already has Ryan Gosling set to star.
The story centers on an astronaut who wakes up to find himself millions of miles away from home, in a tiny craft with two dead crewmates for company and no recollection of his mission or even his name. But this man will soon discover he is humanity’s only hope for survival from an extinction-level threat.
Filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are on board to direct and so both will also likely do some work on the script as well. MGM acquired the film rights to the work for a whopping $3 million.
Goddard got his start working on both “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Alias” and “Lost” before penning films like “Cloverfield” and “World War Z” along with helping setup Netflix’s “Daredevil”.
