Trank On “Capone” Reaction & Weirdness

“Chronicle” and “Fantastic Four” director Josh Trank recently made a comeback with “Capone,” the Tom Hardy-led gangster biopic which had mixed reviews with much of the commentary focused on how strange the film was.

The film is set at a time in Capone’s late forties as dementia rotted his mind following nearly a decade of imprisonment. As a result, Trank showed off harrowing memories of Capone’s violent and brutal origins melting into his waking life.

Speaking with Heat Vision recently, Trank revealed he was originally going to hold back more but was advised by other filmmakers to push the film’s weirdness harder:

“Yeah, everybody was like, ‘There are areas where you could be weirder. If you’ve already gone this far to make a movie this weird and this unexpected, own it. Own your s–t.’ No pun intended… I’m actually very happy with the outcome.”

He’s also quite happy over the divisive reaction that has emerged in the weeks since its release:

“At this moment, it looks like it’s split down the middle, and the things that people seem to love about the movie are the same exact things that other people hate about the movie. That’s perfectly fine because everything in this movie is up front and center for you to see. Nothing is being hidden. It’s right there.

But I’m glad that what people are reacting to are the most extreme elements of the movie. It’s getting a reaction. If you hate this movie, that’s perfectly fine because you’re reacting to something that’s pretty real.”

Linda Cardellini, Matt Dillon, Kyle MacLachlan, Kathrine Narducci, Jack Lowden and Noel Fisher co-star in the film which is now available to watch on VOD.
