The numbers are now in and Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Far From Home” beat expectations, the web-slinging adventure coming in ahead of all estimates with a $185 million debut during its first six days in theaters in North America alone.
“Spider-Man: Far From Home” pulled in $38 million on Tuesday, $27 million on Wednesday, and $25 million on the holiday Thursday before taking in a further $93 million over the traditional three-day weekend.
This marks Sony Pictures biggest six-day opening weekend ever on top of other records like biggest Tuesday ticket sales of all time, best Wednesday grosses for a Marvel movie and the second-largest Fourth of July holiday.
Overseas, the film also soared and earned $395 million – pushing up its global tally to a mighty $580 million after just ten days. The film is performing better than “Captain Marvel” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” at the same point in their release cycles.
Disney took second place with “Toy Story 4” sliding to $34 million in its third weekend. The film has so far made $306 million domestically and a further $350 million overseas. Also performing well was “Yesterday” in third with $10 million, a fall of just 37% from its opening weekend. “Annabelle Comes Home” was fourth with $9.7 million during its second outing.
“Hereditary” director Ari Aster’s R-rated folk horror tale “Midsommar” also opened but came in under expectations, generating $6 million over the weekend and $10.9 million during its first five days of release. Reviews were mostly positive, but the audience was divided with a C+ CinemaScore.
“Avengers: Endgame” got a small boost from “Spider-Man” being around, taking in a further $4.5 million globally. It now stands at $2.77 billion worldwide, roughly $15 million behind “Avatar” as the biggest movie of all time.
