“Gears of War” Film Gets An “Avatar” Scribe

Universal Pictures has set Shane Salerno (“Avatar 2,” “Breakdown,” “Savages”) to pen the screenplay for the live-action film adaptation of the “Gears Of War” game franchise.

Set on the planet Sera, the game thrusts players into a battle for survival between humans and a race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet known as the Locust Horde. Players assume identities of soldiers on Delta Squad as they fight to save Sera’s inhabitants.

The five games in the ‘Gears’ series have sold over 27 million copies and generated $1 billion in sales since the first game debuted in 2006. It is considered Microsoft’s second biggest exclusive franchise behind only the “Halo” series.

Dylan Clark (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”) will produce, but no director is involved as yet. The likes of Len Wiseman, Chris Morgan, and Billy Ray were attached at different points when the project was previously set-up at New Line.
