Fox CEO Wants More Than Superheroes

These days the only guaranteed box-office juggernauts are movies from the superhero genre, and this year has seen a large amount of them hit the multiplexes including “Black Panther,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Deadpool 2” with all three situated as the top films at the worldwide box-office this year.

They’ll be joined this week by “The Incredibles 2” and then a few weeks later by Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp”. Understandably there’s concern in circles regarding what happens when the inevitable bubble bursts. That includes Fox Chairman and CEO Stacey Snider who addressed a crowd the other day at CineEurope saying:

“The studios need to have a bigger appetite for big cinematic, tentpole-type entertainment that isn’t necessarily based on branded material. When you think about ‘The Greatest Showman’…what we had to hang onto was that the music was incredible and that, if ever there was a person to be ‘The Greatest Showman’ at Christmastime, it was Hugh Jackman. The same with ‘The Martian’ – it was based on a book that was self-published. It was hardly a bestseller… If we don’t continue to reach out to the folks that come more than just to see ‘The Avengers,’ we are going to have just the weekend business.”

Marvel Studios, Warner Bros. and FOX themselves are already themselves) moving full steam ahead with superhero films, it doesn’t look like the bubble is bursting anytime soon.
