When it comes to blockbuster franchise movies, Zoe Saldana has been a part of numerous ones.
“Star Trek,” “Avatar,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and early in her career “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Now though, that kind of filmmaking has started to become a struggle for the actress.
Speaking to Women’s Wear Daily recently, she opened up about her life and career and says she felt stifled by her commitments to franchises:
“I feel that for the last ten years of my life, I’ve been just stuck. I felt stuck doing these franchises. I’m very grateful for the opportunities that they provided, from collaborating with amazing directors and getting to meet cast members that I consider friends and getting to play a role that fans, especially children, love.
But it also meant that I felt artistically stuck in my craft of not being able to expand or grow or challenge myself by playing different sorts of genres and different roles.
As a result, she lately has been expanding her acting talents in other projects, such as Netflix’s “From Scratch” series and the upcoming “Lioness”. She says stepping beyond the franchises is “something that I wanted to do for a very long time”.
That doesn’t mean she’s leaving them behind, as she’s still committed to a fourth and fifth “Avatar”.
